STARTING YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY – 5 EASY STEPS

04 September 2023

Your fitness journey, it’s the thing you’ve been putting off and telling yourself you’ll start next week, month or after an occasion. You think that when you start, you need to have the ‘all or nothing’ attitude and because of this, you never end up starting.
If you take anything away from this blog post, let it be this – start now, your fitness journey will never be perfect but this is how we learn.

We often think that we need to give 100% commitment to our fitness journey, train 5 times a week, never socialise and never eat another takeaway for as long as we live. This method is completely unsustainable and never works. Starting your fitness journey doesn’t mean you should give up the things you love, it’s about finding balance.

For our mental and physical wellbeing we should all incorporate some sort of exercise into our daily routine. What holds a lot of people back is the thought of getting started – so I’m going to share some tips on how to start your fitness journey to make it as easy as possible.

HOW TO START?

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so let’s start off slow and work our way up.

  • Find an activity you enjoy, whether it’s swimming, pilates, yoga, running, walking, Gym, football and do this minimum 3 times a week. Maybe bring a friend along for the first few times to make it less daunting.
  • To compliment this new activity, look at the steps you are currently getting daily, to start, try and add another 2K steps on to this. With time you can increase these steps.
  • Look at your current diet, is it balanced? Are you getting a good source of protein, veg, carbs in each meal? If not, then try and be more conscious of the food you’re eating. Limit eating out and enjoy more home cooked meals.
  • Try and aim for at least 2L of water a day. This is so overlooked but absolutely vital.
  • How many hours of sleep are you getting? If we are sleep deprived it affects all aspects of our life. We tend to snack more, have little energy and it can severely affect our overall health. Aim for 7-8 hours a night. Limit the caffeine during the day – maybe give yourself a cut off point 6 hours before bed.

The important thing to remember is that we are not aiming for perfection, we are aiming for consistency. Taking these small actions to better your health and well being are very easy to incorporate into your life, and are worth it.
It’s never too late to start!
